Title says it all, really. I have about (give or take $50) $300 to spend on a sub (or subs) and amp, not counting the enclosure. My thinking right now is with a pair of 07CVRs and an Alpine MRX-M50. Is there a better way to spend that money? I'm sure everyone says this, but I'm looking for a healthy compromise between SPL and SQ. Thanks!

Im  Did you mean $300 for subs and $300 for an amp? It looks like the amp is 300 and a pair of those subs are 300.

Get a 15" if you can fit it. Very good SQ and will get loud if you want it to. Or a single 12" should be fine also. I like single sub systems because there is less interference between the subs. What I mean is you will never be equally close to 2 subs so there will be a degree of cancellation. 2 subs will def get louder than one but I personally like the sound of just one. It sounds cleaner and more defined to me. Plus I would rather put the proper amount of power to one than just enough power to 2. Just my opinions.

I've heard that the newest alpine S class subwoofers are very nice sounding, the alpine rep that checks in here has raved about their new 15". As far as amplifier goes, you seem to be on the right track with a D class as they won't be as hard on your charging system. There are alot of amps in your price range that can put out more power. I really like the looks of the Massive audio and PPI amps. They put a good amout of power out and have a very small footprint.

Don't overlook buying used from craigslist or the classifieds here, though. I've seen very nice amps locallly for good prices. The down side is that they aren't always as cosmetically correct, you may have to wait for a deal, and you need a way to test the function of the amplifier. If you have no experience with this it may be too intimidating. Patience can pay off, though, I got an old school phoenix gold amp last weekend that works great for $25. Not bad for an amp that is rated at 100w x2 @ 4 ohms and 400x1.

My vote is for PPI P1000.1 (it's on sale right now for 180 shipped) plus the best "cheap" subwoofer you can afford. I have been happy with Infinity Kappa 120.9w (they cost around $140). The new 2012 Alpine Type-S looks really interesting too.

Thanks for all the replies! From this thread and a little more independent research I've started to lean towards an SSA DCON 12". That being said, the P1000.1 delivers way more power than I need. I figure if I can save the $30, is there a reason to go with it over the MRX-M50? I could wire the sub at 2 ohms and still have a good amount of headroom with the amp. I don't think I would be upgrading to multiple subs at any point, and above all, I don't think my electrical system can handle more than ~500W RMS for the sub. 80A alternator, already feeding 150W to an amp driving mids. I've been looking on Craigslist for gear but living in a relatively small town does not make that an effective way to purchase components, unfortunately.

What vehicle is this going into, & how much space are you willing to give up?

It's going into a 2002 Toyota Camry. Well, I don't take it on trips or anything so I would be willing to give up quite a bit. I keep skates / basketball / clothing in the trunk as well and I do need room for that.

Locally, someone selling a pair of 2 year old Type Rs / MRP650 / Ported Enclosure that I think is actually a decent box, it's about 4.6 cubic feet, for only $250. Thoughts on that deal?

Those are probably average subs.. with the 2012 Type-R hitting the market soon, they're now 2 generations old. Rs were usually known for good power handling. I'd buy the amplifier if it works fine, and combine it with a single newer Alpine Type-R or 2012 Type-S.
