RS100-4 vs RS52 dedicated midrange

Ok, so I'm trying to decide on which to use in my upcoming 3-way front stage.

Power will more than likely be off a JL 300/4. I'm planning to install whichever speaker in pillar pods close to the tweeter as possible, since the mid and tweet will be run off the tweet pre-out on my deck, t/a will affect both. Peerless will remain installed in my doors as dedicated midbass. Then the mid will start somewhere around 500-1000hz, I'll have to test that out and see what works. I'll lp the mid probably somewhere around 4-5khz and have the Neo3 pick up from there.

RS100

Pros: Price. Plays lower and possibly higher w/o breakup.
Cons: Needs an enclosure.

RS52

Pros: No enclosure necessary
Cons: size, but this could probably be fixed by trimming down the mounting flange.

Does anyone on here have anything else to add either way for these drivers? I plan to start the build in a few weeks but I'm still trying to source a 300/4.

Thanks,

Patrick

Yea I read through that post, but I'm still undecided. I'm trying to find someone that has used both of these drivers (or similar ones) and can post their pros and cons. I'm kinda in the middle right now, with a slight lean to the domes, just because they don't require an enclosure, but the size is a draw back, plus I'm not sure if they can be crossed as low as I want, which is around 5-600hz.

The RS52 is a very nice driver. It could play down to 500hz, no problem. It is a very low distortion driver.Sounds neutral on the cold side. Very good dinamics, gets loud! Wide bandwich. (400-12k).
I use them from 900hz to 7khz. No audible breakup up to 10khz.
You could remove the flange.
No need for an enclosure and dynamics are the big pros.
Cones play lower, have lower sensibility and you will have do put them in the right enclosure or IB.
I like the midbass driver playing up to 600-900hz. No need for a big cone midrange.

Awesome thank you for your response. How is your staging with the cone playing up that high? I don't think I'll have a problem playing them up that high but I still want there to be a smooth transition from my midbass being mounted in the doors and the midrange and tweeter being mounted on the dash in pillars.

Also, do you have a picture of your setup, I'm curious to see what it looks like. My other concern is the depth of the RS52, I'm really worried that it might stick out too far and I really don't want the pods to be an eye sore.

Thank you.

I tell you what.
I have a while yet to get around to using my RS52's. If you want; I'll send you mine to use if you send me a deposit (won't be full price, whatever FMV is for a new set 2nd hand and shipping). That way you can test them out, see if you like them; and if you want, buy them from me or send them back, and I'll refund you all of your money (minus the shipping) if they aren't damaged.

I'm kinda leaning towards the domes currently, just because they don't need an enclosure which I really like that way I can design the pods around being aesthetically pleasing, instead of needing to aim for the proper size, while not being too large. Danssoslow, I may just take you up on that deal just let me figure out what I need to do first.

The only issue I see currently with the RS52 over the RS100, is that the dome cannot play as low compared to the cone, and with both the mid and tweet being mounted on my dash that may cause a problem.

Does anyone have experience with domes and tweets on dash, with a highish crossover point? I'm curious about blending issues really. I mean, currently with my tweets on the dash and mids in doors, crossed at 2.5k w/ a 24db slope, there aren't any problems. I'm guessing my only true way to figure this out is to just test it and see what happens.

Eh, I went ahead and ordered the RS100s...can't beat 50 shipped for a pair :)

The Rs100 is smaller in every measurement (even depth) and 1.4L isn't very big at all so now I just need an amp and I can get started on my 3-way front stage :)

These should easily play down to 250-300hz w/o breakup but we'll see what happens. I'm thinking testing is going to be via a towel stuffed behind the driver to see what I like and how well it blends.

Yea, 2-300hz is what i'm gonna try for, depends on where my 9887 high passes at, can't remember exactly off the top of my head.

1.4L is barely big enough for the driver to fit in, so fitting them shouldn't be a problem.

I guess now all thats left to do is experiment with placement and aiming. I'm trying to decide if I want to build the pods up the a-pillar, or do dash pods and have them extend across the dash. Then I need to be concerned with aiming...ughh this could get annoying. Oh well, it should sound better in the long run though :)
